Being a fashion photographer is one of the most exciting and sought after professions. A fashion photographer gets to meet famous (and beautiful!) models, they get invited to all of the best parties, and their work is seen by millions of people around the world. Additionally, the pay as a fashion photographer isn’t too bad either. Despite these tremendous benefits, being a fashion photographer remains a job that only a select few can enjoy. Like most high profile, exciting jobs, the demand for the few positions as a regular fashion photographer is extremely high.
To be a successful fashion photographer requires a great amount of skill, determination, and perseverance. No one can start as a fashion photographer for a famous magazine. Rather, you have to slowly work your way up to that point, taking a lot of less glamorous projects along the way. If you were to ask a famous fashion photographer about how they got to where they are today, they will surely have a long list of work that you would have never heard of. Only once an aspiring fashion photographer has created an impressive portfolio and started to gain a good reputation will they be able to get more high profile work. As well, many people who want to be a fashion photographer will never get to where they want to be no matter how hard they try – there is just too much competition for everyone to be a big success. This is not an attempt to dissuade anyone who wants to be a fashion photographer from following their dream, but rather a warning at some of the difficulties they may encounter along the way.
